Without a kit, there is no way I could achieve this Highland Railway lattice footbridge for Kyle of Sutherland. But it was a frustrating business, and the end result should not be viewed too closely.
Culrain’s down platform is about fifteen inches higher than the up platform. I supported the main pillars on base plates at the right height, but left the down steps to be buried as was usual on the Highland when platforms were raised.
My difficulty was in aligning the main structural sub-assemblies, such as steps to side girders and steps to landings, and keeping verticals truly vertical. I would rather the kit had no tabs or slots, but supplied good prototype views of the main assembly joints. And if I were to start again, I would definitely re-engineer the stairways. However, this is a worthy addition to the layout and I am indebted to Lochgorm Models for the kit.
